Looking back, how can we give Shukri al-Quwatli his proper place in history

Former Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli suffered a stroke when hearing of the Arab defeat in the War of 1967 and died in hospital on June 30, 1967. On the 40th anniversary of his passing we are re-visiting "the father of Syrian independence."

Although the title ?Father of Syria?s Independence? can be attributed to Shukri Al Quwatli, it has to be bestowed with some degree of qualification. I spent six months thinking of a challenging and rewarding topic for my doctoral dissertat......

Yet this June of 1967, the heartbreak was more poignant, and more personal: the humiliating defeat of the Arabs during the Six Day War, was only exacerbated by the fact that he was li......

Joshua LandisSyria Comment
One of the great debates about Shukri al-Quwatli?s role in Syrian history is over the reasons he consented to united Syria with Egypt in 1958. As president, he was perhaps the one civilian, who might have blocked the merger, negotiated by Syria?s military Baath Party leaders. I have always wondered what went through his mind when he signed the UAR agreement ......
