Before we answer this question, I think it is relevant to ask ourselves how we got to where we are in the first place?
While Israeli actions in Lebanon are outrageous, and while, for the sake of national unity, many Lebanese are tempted to avoid assigning blame, in reality, it is in no one?s best interest, neither Lebanon?s nor Syria?s nor the Arab world?s, to forget or ignore how we got embroiled into this conflict in the first place, and what the hallmarks of the overall geopolitical context in which the war is taking place are.
In other words, we cannot afford to forget about Hezboll...... |

There is quite a distance between what the US should do and what the US is actually doing. Ideally, the US should exercise its leadership in the UN Security Council by calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the south of Lebanon to stop the mounting toll of civilian casualties. Once the guns are silent, the US, together with the other four permanent members, must facilitate negotiations between the conflicting parties ? even if through intermediaries -- so that a fair solution to the larger conflict can be found.
This however will not happen. By adopting a jingois...... |

The Israeli Invasion of Lebanon in 1982 resulted in an estimated 17,825 Arab casualties, including thousands of Lebanese and Palestinian civilians killed. Israel succeeded in removing the minor threat of the Lebanon based PLO groups, but its intervention led to the creation of the much more formidable Hizbollah Lebanese resistance in its place. Israel fought Hizbollah for 18 years, until year 2000 when it was clear that victory over Hizbollah was impossible. Israel then decided to unilaterally withdraw...... |
